Depending on whether you're moving locally within the same neighborhood or from one state to another, you may decide to change your cell phone service. Different carriers have different coverage from state to state and you definitely want to research to make sure you're using the best carrier for that area. You also will want to check the reception at your new residence - we've seen cases where the coverage may be great in sa neighborhood but awful in one's own kitchen.

With the recent passage of federal legislation around number portability, it is now possible to take your number with you when switching services. Cell phone operators are required to allow you to do this. On the other hand, you may want to change your number in order to have a local area code in your new location.

You should consider whether to get a national or local plan. If you're going to be doing a lot traveling, you may want to get a national plan that has no roaming surcharges. If you're planning to call people back home, you may want to buy a plan that includes unlimited long distance. If you're moving between countries, many providers offer plans that charge a flat monthly fee in exchange for reduced per-minute charges on international calls.

Also, consider prepaid service if you're not sure how much you will be using.  Prepaid service can be carried over from month-to-month so you don't lose any minutes from a flat-rate plan. Also, it doesn't require a credit check or a long-term contact, so it gives you maximum flexibility.
