Telephone

If you're making a local move, it may be an option to keep your existing telephone number. You may even be able to have both your old and new residence simultaneously use the same telephone number during the transition. For longer distance moves, you will have to change your phone number and even your phone company. Check with your new landlord or real estate agent for information on who is the service provider for your new location. Some locations may even have multiple service providers that you can choose between and some cable companies have even begun offering telephone service.

In today's mobile world, many people have decided to forgo their land lines in favor of using cell phones. You definitely may want to consider this as a telephone line that is hardly used may still cost you tens of dollars each month. A caveat, if you have a TiVo, 56K dial-up access, or an alarm system that calls a central monitoring service, you may still need your land line. Also, if you live in an apartment with an intercom system that dials your home phone, some apartment buildings may require you to maintain a land line or at least a cell phone with a local number.
