State and Local Taxes

While we're certainly not in the business of giving tax advice as we're not tax professionals, here are some handy tips to keep in mind when you're moving or when April 15th rolls around:

  • save your receipts! The cost of the move MAY be tax deductible, particularly if your move is work-related
  • any interest you pay on your mortgage is likely tax deductible

A few more tips:

  • don't forget that you must file tax returns for the individual states that you earned money in at any point during the year
  • sales taxes and income taxes can vary drastically from state to state--so depending on where you're moving from or to, you might want to go on a last minute shopping spree!  ;-)
  • States with ZERO sales tax: Oregon, New Hampshire, and Montana
  • States with higher sales tax (though it varies per county): parts of Tennessee, Washington, and Louisiana have a sales tax of over 8 or 9%!
